The Afsluitdijk
The Afsluitdijk is an iconic example of Dutch hydraulic engineering, completed in 1932 to protect the land from the Wadden Sea. Stretching 32 kilometers, it separates the IJsselmeer from the Wadden Sea, playing a vital role in flood prevention for the northern Netherlands. Besides its primary function as a flood defense, it also serves as a key transportation link between North Holland and Friesland, as part of the A7 highway.
Over the years, the dike has been reinforced to meet modern safety standards. Future plans for the Afsluitdijk include sustainability initiatives, such as nature conservation projects and renewable energy generation, including hydropower.
The continued preservation of the Afsluitdijk is essential for protecting the Netherlands against rising sea levels and extreme weather. It remains a symbol of Dutch expertise in water management and a crucial component in the country’s network of dikes, dams, and sluices.
